Wagamama Group

Celebrated for its Asian-inspired and Japanese cuisine, Wagamama opened its first restaurant in London’s Bloomsbury in 1992. This launch sparked a culinary revolution in the UK.

Inspired by Japanese ramen bars

The company draws inspiration from the bustling ramen bars of Japan, famous for their quick service and authentic flavors. As a result, Wagamama replicates this experience. It offers a unique dining atmosphere and introduces a fresh approach to Asian cuisine. Moreover, the name translates to “self-indulgent” or “self-centered” in Japanese, reflecting the brand’s focus on putting the customer first. To support this philosophy, Wagamama embeds the kaizen process—a Japanese strategy of continuous improvement—into its operations. This approach refines both workflow and customer experience.

Founder and growth of Wagamama

Alan Yau founded Wagamama, bringing his passion for food to life. In 1988, he left an academic career to open a Chinese takeaway. Subsequently, he launched Wagamama, a chain of canteen-style noodle restaurants. Wagamama’s success attracted Matthew Brown, founder of The Restaurant Group PLC, who acquired Wagamama Group Limited in 2006 for £559 million. This acquisition marked a key milestone in the brand’s expansion.

Recent developments

Wagamama gained renewed attention in 2023 when The Restaurant Group sold most of its portfolio but kept Wagamama. Consequently, by October, the company accepted a buyout from US-based private equity firm Apollo Global Management (APG). They finalized the £701 million purchase in December 2023. This acquisition therefore opened a new chapter for Wagamama under APG’s ownership.

Global expansion and leadership

From its London beginnings, Wagamama has grown to over 190 locations worldwide, including 130 restaurants in the UK. This impressive growth demonstrates the brand’s popularity. It also highlights its successful adaptation of Asian culinary traditions. CEO Thomas Heier, who joined the company over six years ago and has led it since 2021, continues to drive growth. He expands Wagamama’s global footprint.

Recognition and awards

Wagamama’s commitment to quality and innovation has earned multiple prestigious awards. In 2018, the chain won the Casual Dining Award for Large Multi-Site Restaurant Brand of the Year. It also received the Corporate Engagement Award (CEA) for its innovative collaborations. Additionally, the brand earned the Confimprese Award for Best New Premium Foreign Retailer. This recognition highlighted its international success.

In 2019, Wagamama continued its streak of accolades, winning the Casual Dining Award for Best Multi-Site Restaurant. The brand also received praise for its marketing campaign, “Feed Your Inner Good.” This campaign further highlighted the company’s dedication to promoting well-being through food.
