In 1988, Paul Koole founded Koole Contractors, an innovative demolition and salvage company that now operates across four countries. With a team of 250 employees and numerous freelancers, the firm actively transforms the global landscape, undertaking projects in Libya, Nigeria, the Caribbean, Suriname, and Sweden.
Under Paul Koole’s guidance, Koole Contractors consists of four specialized divisions: Maritime, Construction, Industrial, and Environmental. Initially, the Maritime division formed the company’s foundation, focusing on wreck removals and salvage operations. Over time, the Construction division emerged to address complex challenges, such as salvaging an exploded tanker while simultaneously repairing a quay wall. As a result, it now specializes in maritime construction, building mooring docks and shore protection structures.
The Industrial division prepares construction sites and removes industrial objects efficiently. Meanwhile, the Environmental division evolved from the need to safely remove hazardous materials, including asbestos and polluted soil, during demolitions. Today, it handles the containment and removal of substances harmful to humans and the environment, both on land and at sea.
All international projects rely on specialized—and often floating—equipment. Moreover, the company constantly develops innovative tools to execute tasks faster and more efficiently while minimizing manual labor. Its proprietary machinery ranges from remotely operated excavators to asbestos vacuum trucks, designed exclusively for the firm’s operations.
Sustainability guides every project. For instance, Koole Contractors plants hundreds of trees, installs solar panels, and transitions employees to electric vehicles. In addition, a farm under development at the main office exemplifies its commitment to nature-friendly operations.
Noteworthy project
A standout green initiative is the clearance and demolition of the ADM site in Amsterdam’s Western port area. Upon completion, the team will launch Europe’s first—and largest—green demolition terminal. From mid-2020 onwards, sea vessels and drilling platforms will be dismantled using environmentally responsible methods. Furthermore, all materials will be reused, and electric machinery will minimize CO2 emissions and exhaust pollutants.
